First Penance (Reconciliation) & First Holy Communion
Our second grade children will begin the Sacramental Program, where they are prepared for and will receive their First Penance
and First Holy Communion.
This is a very important time for them, because as Christians,
they will be receiving the forgiveness of the Lord as well as coming to the
Table of the Lord for the first time.
The date for our First Penance class to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
will be at the beginning of April. More information
along with the date will be sent home with your child.
Before the children go to confession, the children should examine their conscience. This means that you are
bringing to mind the things that you have done that you should not have done, and the things that you should have done that you did not do, especially the things that have hurt God and others. In order for your sins to be forgiven, you need to be sorry for your sins and be willing to try not to do them again.
After their examination of conscience, the children will go into the
Reconciliation Room and sit on the chair facing
Father. We are teaching the children to receive the Sacrament the universal way: They
will begin by making the Sign of the Cross and saying: “Bless
me Father for I have sinned.
This is my first confession. These are my sins” (They will then tell Father
their sins). After
telling Father their sins, they should say the Act of Contrition. Following our First Penance Ceremony, we invite everyone to our First Penance
down stairs in the Church Hall.
Communion class will receive First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 6, 2017,
at 11:00 a.m., at St. Brigid Church, 1088 New Britain Avenue.
Our rehearsal date will
be Friday evening, May 5, 2017, at 7:00 p.m., at St. Brigid Church. Because
the each child has a part in the ceremony it is very important that each child
attend the rehearsal.
Dress code for First Communion Children:
- Girls: White dress,
shoes (no sneakers), headpiece (veil, flowers etc.) Gloves are
optional. Gloves will not be worn when they come up for Communion. We are
providing a wrist corsage for the girls.
- Boys: White shirt,
white tie (we will provide the white tie), dress slacks, shoes
(no sneakers!) No jacket or sport coat will be worn during the ceremony).
ask all parents, to help us to prepare the children. Take time to pray with
child and attend Mass. Also, take a few minutes to review the class work with
your child. Just a couple minutes each day to go over prayers will set a
good habit. This is very important because it will help to reinforce what your child has
learned in class
