We use Our Sunday Visitor - Alive In Christ text books.  Each child receives his or her own book.  The third grade class also uses the First Communion book also from Our Sunday Visitor.

Third grade students should demonstrate at the end of this grade level the following understandings:

  • Jesus gave us himself in the Eucharist at the last supper and continues to give himself to us in the bread and wine that becomes his body and blood.

  • The bread and wine of the Eucharist are consecrated by the priest and through the power of the Holy Spirit and these gifts of bread and wine truly become the body and blood of Jesus.  We receive Jesus so that we can become more like Jesus. We should receive Communion often.

  • The Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass) is the most important prayer of the Church.

  • The Liturgy of the Word is Gospel stories about Jesus and the God's Word.  The Prayer of the Faithful are a way of joining our prayers with those of the community.

  • The value of Sunday as the "Lord's day" when we gather to offer praise and thanksgiving to God.

  • Understand there are different ministries in the Church: Eucharistic ministers, lectors, ministers of hospitality, altar servers.

  • Discover the meaning of the different areas and objects used at Mass such as the altar, tabernacle, crucifix, chalice, paten, vestments, baptismal font, stations of the cross, reconciliation room and that a genuflection before the Blessed Sacrament as a prayer of reverence.

  • The different ways to receive communion and learn how to receive Communion reverently.

  • Go over the Blessed Trinity and name the three persons and recite the Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.
