Stations of The Cross

Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of His garments

Jesus arrives at His destination. He glances up, the other two prisoners are in place, screaming in pain. He looks down and patiently waits for the soldiers to lead Him to His turn.

Jesus is nearing his final moment when the soldiers strip him of his clothing in a savage effort to mortify him. Somehow, we yearn to be something great in this life, always seeking goals that are beyond us or not good for us: never content with being the simple, ordinary, run of the mill person God made. They remove His clothes, tossing them in a heap nearby.

Part of the indignity is to be crucified naked. Jesus is completely stripped of any pride The wounds on his back are torn open again. He experiences the ultimate vulnerability of the defenseless. No shield or security protects him.

As they stare at him, his eyes turn to heaven.

The soldiers debated what to do with His clothes as they laid the cross on the ground in front of Him.

They decided to cast lots for them, thus fulfilling the scripture which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." (Psalm 22:18)

Jesus lifted His eyes to the Heavens and prayed.
