Stations of The Cross

Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene bears the Cross

They move forward towards the hill where the crucifixion is to take place. The soldiers realize that Jesus is very weak and that the hill is steep enough that Jesus would not make it.

Seeing that at each step Jesus, from weakness, was on the point of expiring, and fearing that He would die on the way, when they wished Him to die the ignominious death of the Cross, decided to find help to carry the Cross behind our Lord.

As they scanned the crowd, they spotted Simon of Cyrene. Simon was passing by on his way home.  He was coming in from the fields.  He was the father of Alexander and Rufus.

The soldiers pressed into helping Jesus by carrying his cross.  A Roman soldier pushes him towards Jesus telling him what he wanted done.

Simon saw the pitiful sight of this condemned man. Jesus was bruised, bleeding, covered with sweat and grime and Simon quickly picked up the cross. They moved uphill with Jesus following.

How pleased would Jesus have been, had Simon offered his services of his own accord. However, Simon was not invited by Christ as you are. He says: “Take up your cross and follow Me.” Nevertheless you recoil, and carry it grudgingly.
